Acute Care Rehab Audiology Department Receives the Excellent Hearing Screening Award

Acute care Rehab Audiology Department
(L-R) Courtney Oliszewski, Audiology Clinical Coordinator, Mildred Dones, Acute Care and South Tampa Director, Suzanne Holder and Jamie Mastry (Acute Care Rehab Audiologists)
Congratulations to the Acute Care Rehab Audiology Department, which received the Excellent Hearing Screening Award from the Department of Health Children Medical Services for the month of August. The award, which comes with a $1,000 grant, was presented on October 29 by Laura Olsen, Hospital Hearing Educator for the Florida Dept. of Health.

Florida law now requires all newborns to have a hearing screening to identify infants at risk of hearing impairment and to ensure that follow-up audiometric screening, diagnosis, and referral to intervention is provided.

This award is typically given to birthing hospitals.  ACH is the first non-birthing hospital to receive this award. The award is based on the following criteria:

  • Lowest percent of babies for whom hearing screening results were not reported prior to when monthly reports are sent.
  • Lowest percent of babies not screened for hearing.
  • Lowest percentage of babies who were referred on the initial hearing screening and are still in pending status.

"It takes a team effort to ensure we are able to provide newborn hearing screenings to our NICU population, said Mildred Dones, P.T., ACH Director of Acute Care Rehab & South Tampa Outpatient Care Center. "The entire NICU team (bedside RNs, ARNP's, discharge planners) helps us to identify infants who are pending discharge so our audiologists can screen them. In 2011, we performed 1,001 newborn hearing screenings. Of those, 2.09% had hearing loss that required follow up Audiology services. I'm extremely proud of the Audiology team. They are always striving for excellence and quality patient care."
