|New ACH Ambulances Give Patients a Smooth Ride|
Two new ambulances recently put into service will give patients and staff a smoother and more spacious ride to ACH. They replace two ambulances that logged over 600,000 miles combined.
The new vehicles are Freightliner M2's. They have a four door chassis with a Mercedes-Benz engine. They're designed similar to our previous ambulances except they have a four-door cab instead of an extended cab.
They will provide a better and safer seating configuration for staff. They can slide forward to give staff better patient access while staying secured in their seat belts.
Each ambulance will travel with a team composed of a registered nurse, a respiratory therapist or paramedic and an EMT. They provide the highest level of critical care to sick or injured infants and children by bringing the intensive care unit directly to the patient's bedside.
The vehicles can transport two isolettes, two stretchers, or one of each. Custom cabinets inside the vehicles are designed with secured drawers to store equipment, trash and soiled linens.
In addition to life-saving medical equipment, the ambulances also contain a TV and DVD player. Patients can watch a variety of movies and cartoons. This helps decrease anxiety during their trip.
"The special air ride suspension system on the vehicles will help to decrease vibration," said Louise Bowen, Director of Transport Services. "This is especially important for the premature infants we transport."
Bowen says the new vehicles can expect to rack up approximately 60,000 miles a year traveling throughout west central Florida.
Since its inception in the 1970's, the Transport Team has safely transported over 30,000 patients to ACH. The Team consists of ten registered nurses, six respiratory therapists, four paramedics and six EMT's. Collectively, this group has 478 years of highly specialized neonatal and pediatric critical care experience.
