Sexton Elementary Receives Asthma-Friendly School AwardThe Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Pinellas County honored John M. Sexton Elementary for working with community partners to create a safe and healthy environment for students with asthma.

DOH and the Florida Asthma Coalition, a statewide group that works to improve asthma outcomes and reduce associated costs, presented a Silver Level Asthma-Friendly School Award to Sexton's staff on Monday, May 20.

Sexton Elementary is the first school in Pinellas County and one of the first in the state to receive the award. Participating schools were recognized as part of May's Asthma Awareness Month. Partners include the DOH, All Children's Hospital, the American Lung Association, and the Suncoast Pediatric Asthma Coalition.

To be eligible for the award, The staff at Sexton Elementary completed professional development courses in asthma management, formed a team dedicated to this issue, established clear processes to identify students with asthma, ensured access to medications, increased awareness among all school staff and students, and took other actions to create a safe and healthy environment.
