Dr. Ron Rosenfeld, Respected Pediatric Endocrinologist, Speaks at All Children’s Hospital

For the past 20 years, Dr. Ron Rosenfeld Dr. Ron Rosenfeld has been a highly respected leader in pediatric endocrinology and an acclaimed expert in the field of human growth disorders. Now he has shared his wealth of knowledge with All Children's Hospital as this year's Kuehnle Visiting Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology.
As part of his visit to the ACH campus in mid-December, Dr. Rosenfeld offered insights drawn from his remarkable career during a dynamic Grand Round presentation to many members of the medical staff.
The Chair of Pediatrics in Portland at the Oregon Health Sciences University presented findings from his work, which has explored multiple defects in the growth-hormone signaling cascade and examined mechanisms of  action of insulin-like growth factors, their binding proteins, and related proteins.
The Kuehnle Visiting Professorship in Pediatric Endocrinology was established in honor of Allen Root, M.D., who founded the pediatric endocrinology program at All Children's in 1973. Each year, the professorship brings an eminent pediatric endocrinologist to the ACH campus for lectures and scholarship.
After his talk, Dr. Rosenfeld expressed excitement over his new relationship with All Children's.
"No. 1, of course, is the opportunity to honor Dr. Root, but I'm enormously impressed by what I've seen here - not just the hospital itself, which is spectacular, but the enthusiasm, the energy, the plans, and the vision that they have," he said. "I think you guys are going to be stars."
Dr. Root was in attendance and equally pleased with Dr. Rosenfeld's visit. "It's a real honor to have Dr. Rosenfeld here ¬ - he clearly is one of the foremost pediatric endocrinologists in the world and his work in abnormalities of growth is unparalleled," he said.
Dr. Rosenfeld has authored more than 600 papers, chapters and reviews, he has received the Henry Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Stanford School of Medicine, the 2007 Transatlantic Medal from the Society for Endocrinology and the 2007 Maureen Andrew Mentor Award from the Society of Pediatric Research and Academic Pediatric Societies. He has also been a valued mentor whose former fellows are now leading pediatric endocrinologists around the world.
Edward and Linda Kuehnle also attended the Grand Rounds talk. The roots of their relationship with All Children's reach back some 30 years ago to Atlanta, Ga., where a children's hospital helped their now adult daughter recover from meningitis.
"So we've always had a give-back philosophy, plus when we heard about All Children's after we moved into the area, we wanted to investigate how we could contribute and participate in some way or another," Mr. Kuehnle said. "And once we learned more about the organization and the operation, we were really drawn to it in a big way."

That led to their establishing the visiting professorship - and ultimately the presence of Dr. Rosenfeld at All Children's.
"I was overwhelmed with his educational background and his experiences," Mr. Kuehnle added. "And then to hear him present, you realize just how complex endocrinology is, and how you need to have incredibly talented professionals like Dr. Rosenfeld who are now sharing their knowledge, information and research with the up and coming doctors."
Dr. Pallavi Iyer, head of  the All Children's Specialty Physicians pediatric endocrinology program, was impressed by Dr. Rosenfeld's ability to take a wealth of complex work and be "able to express and communicate at a level understandable by anybody."
"It's very exciting to start having visiting professorships, because we learn from each other and it's nice to engage and inspire young learners about the opportunities," she added.  "We're learning from our patients and continuing the scholarly work, and we never stop learning, thinking and worrying about our patients."
