Johns Hopkins
Children's Heart Surgery Program

The Johns Hopkins Children's Heart Surgery program was established in 2012 to benefit children with congenital heart disease through shared clinical excellence and collaborative research at three centers:

This world-class program unites the strengths of pediatric cardiovascular surgeons at all three locations.

"When All Children's Hospital became a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine back in 2011, we knew we had a great opportunity to expand our expertise and our mission to provide high quality comprehensive care for patients," says Duke Cameron, M.D., Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Johns Hopkins. "This includes patients of all ages, from the infant diagnosed in utero with a heart defect to a growing generation of adult congenital heart disease patients who underwent corrective surgery during childhood."

The addition of a Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando as a third center provided still more opportunities for collaboration in treatment, research and education aimed at providing compassion, state-of-the-art care while developing new approaches in treating congenital heart disease.

Johns Hopkins has long been a pioneer in children's heart surgery. In 1944, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital performed surgery on a young child with a complex congenital heart defect. The "blue baby" operation, as it was popularly called, was the first of many advances that made Johns Hopkins a world leader in cardiovascular surgery.

The Johns Hopkins Children's Heart Surgery physicians performed a combined total of more than 1,000 pediatric and congenital cardiothoracic operations in 2013, making the program one of the largest in the nation. Working together and using evidence-based research, the surgeons are developing innovative approaches aimed at improved outcomes for children with congenital heart disease-from infancy through adulthood.
