What to Bring to the Shelter

  • A crate or a carrier for transporting the animal, a leash and a muzzle, if you think your pet might bite.
  • Pet food and can opener, water, medicines, bowls, toys and kitty litter.  Make sure you have enough for an extended time away.  (Pinellas County will provide food, water and litter.  Bring food only if the animal has special dietary needs.)
  • A first-aid kit
  • The name and telephone number of your veterinarian
  • A document from your veterinarian showing that your pet is current in its rabies vaccinations.  Most shelters will not take pets more than 4 months old that have not been vaccinated.  In Pinellas County, pets must have a county license.
  • Have an identification microchip implanted in your pet, and have it wear a collar with an identification tag.
  • Have a picture of the pet, preferably one taken with the family.  That makes it easier to prove ownership.
  • Take a blanket or an item of clothing with your scent on it, so the pet feels at home.

How to Relieve Pet Stress

  • Spend time now getting your pet used to and comfortable in its crate or carrier.
  • If the animal has never traveled in a car, take it for rides in the carrier.
  • Some animals may require a tranquilizer.  Discuss this now with your veterinarian.
